Founded in 1998, Shaanxi Heli Mechanical Engineering Co., Ltd is a local private enterprise in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, China. We study and analyze the world's advanced mining equipment, and then transforms it in combination with the current situation of material technology in China, so as to improve production efficiency and save economic cost. After years of trials and hardships, it has formed a modern mechanical equipment manufacturing company integrating mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly.
High Load Capacity: Modern shearer gears are designed to withstand high torque and heavy loads, ensuring the cutting drum can penetrate hard coal seams and rock inclusions without structural failure.
Enhanced Safety: By automating the cutting process, these gears reduce the need for manual labor in hazardous areas where drilling or blasting might otherwise be required.
Continuous Production: The robustness of the transmission system allows for continuous coal extraction with minimal downtime, directly impacting the mine's overall production capacity.
Adaptability: Shearer gearboxes can be tailored to various seam thicknesses and geological conditions, allowing for efficient mining even in thin or fluctuating coal seams.
Material Strength: Manufacturers use specialized steels—such as carburized, quenched, and nitrided steels—to ensure the gears remain tough enough for heavy impact while maintaining a hard surface to resist abrasive coal dust.
The Materials of Coal Shearer Gears
The commonly used steels for making gears are quenched and tempered steels, hardened steels, carburized and quenched steels, and nitrided steels. The strength of cast steel is slightly lower than that of forged steel, and is often used for gears with larger dimensions. The mechanical properties of gray cast iron are poor and can be used in open gear transmissions with light loads. Ductile iron can partially replace steel-made gears; plastic gears have many uses. In places with light load and low noise requirements, gears paired with them are generally made of steel gears with good thermal conductivity.
The longwall shearer operates on a repetitive cycle known as the "cutting web." As the machine moves along the coal face, the rotating drums cut into the seam. The coal falls onto the Armored Face Conveyor (AFC) located directly beneath the machine. Once the shearer reaches the end of the face (the "gate"), it performs a "snake" or "sump-in" maneuver to cut deeper into the next section of the seam.
Behind the shearer, Hydraulic Roof Supports (Shields) hold up the mountain. As the shearer and conveyor move forward, these shields advance, allowing the roof behind them to collapse safely into an area called the "gof."

Cutting Unit Power Transmission
The main application is within the rocker arm of the shearer, where a three-stage spur gearbox (including helical and planetary gears) reduces motor speed to deliver high torque to the rotating cutting drum.

Traction and Propulsion System
Gears are used in the electric haulage unit to move the shearer along the armored face conveyor (AFC) at speeds up to 30 m/min. This involves gear systems that manage the movement of 100-ton machines in high-torque scenarios.

Height Adjustment Mechanisms
Gear sets operate within the hydraulic lifting system to allow the shearer to adapt to changing coal seam thicknesses (e.g., from 0.52 to 2.3+ meters).

Low-Coal Seam Extraction
Specifically designed gearing allows for efficient operation in restricted, thin coal seams (e.g., 0.85–1.5 m thickness), maximizing production.
